19세기 멘델의 실험을 통하여 유전법칙이 발견되면서 유전자가 유전의 기본 단위라는 것이 알려지게 되었다. DNA가 유전물질임은 1944년 Avery 박사가 증명하였고, 왓슨과 크릭 박사들이 이 유전물의 구조가 이중나선 구조를 가진다는 것을 밝힘으로써 본격적인 DNA 연구가 시작되었다.
